Summer Vacations: Preparing Your Home While You're Away

Have you planned your summer vacation yet? Whether it’s a long weekend or an extended stay, we’ve put together some tips and tricks for keeping your home safe and sound during your much-needed R & R.
Unplugging Electronics
Appliances can short circuit during a storm and cause an electrical fire and major damage. Make sure to go through and unplug electronics such as, routers, televisions, and computers. It helps save on energy bill, too!
Close Windows and Doors
Making sure all windows and doors are closed and locked. This can cause double damage! Unlocked doors and windows are an open invitation to thieves that can cause unwanted damage to your property. Open windows can also let in humidity and heat, causing condensation that can lead to mold.
Turn off your water
Turning off your main water supply can prevent water damage. Slow leaks can turn into major flooding. There is nothing worse than coming home to a water damaged home!
Adjust the Thermostat
If adjusting the thermostat (another great way to save energy costs!), make sure to not completely turn of the A/C. The air conditioning regulates temperature and moisture – the two main culprits for mold. The standard recommendation is around mid to high 70’s or a few degrees higher than your normal temp.
Clean Up Food
Don’t leave any perishables/ food out – this can attract some unwanted house guests! Cleaning out the refrigerator can also alleviate walking back to a smelly house.
Have an extra set of eyes
Have a trusted friend or family member check on your property while you are away. If something unfortunate does happen, it can be spotted and rectified before any further damage can occur.
Lastly, we know that even the most prepared homeowner can have a disaster strike at any moment. Know that SERVPRO of West Beaver County is here for you and your home.
